The year is 1300, and the Dark Ages never happened

Why the Tax Collector has a tablet and the Bard plays electric: the alternate Middle Ages behind Crown Shuffle.

The Priest and the Royal Advisor peek over a fence and poke a buzzing computer with a stick

The idea behind Crown Shuffle's setting is simple: what would the Middle Ages look like if the great libraries had never burned and knowledge had never been lost?

One small change to history

In our world it's the year 1300, and the so-called Dark Ages simply never arrived. Knowledge wasn't buried, burned or forgotten in dusty corners. It was copied, argued over, improved and occasionally stolen. Literacy spread beyond the monasteries. Mathematics, philosophy and mechanics grew up alongside religion, sometimes cooperating, sometimes politely ignoring one another.

Ideas travelled faster than armies. No region had to reinvent the wheel, though plenty insisted on decorating it differently.

Still very medieval

This is not a modern world wearing a costume. Kings still rule by birthright. Peasants still work the land. Everybody knows their place, or pretends to. Tradition matters, faith matters, and appearances matter most of all.

The difference is what's under the robes. Clever mechanisms, calculating devices and quietly efficient tools. Innovation doesn't overthrow tradition here. It squeezes in beside it, bows, and gets to work.

Where you see it in the game

Look closely at the cards and every character has picked up something from the future:

  • The Tax Collector carries a suspiciously advanced tablet.
  • The Bard has an electric lute and an amplifier powered by mild sorcery.
  • The Grave Digger listens to podcasts about ancient curses while he digs.
  • The Farmer is, first and foremost, an influencer.
  • The Beggar's sign now accepts crypto.

That's the joke at the heart of the game: the social order is ancient, but everybody's problems are painfully current.

And the social order is exactly what Crown Shuffle lets you wreck. Rank is up for grabs every round. Here's how it works.
