The Royal Advisor card

The Royal Advisor

“Knows all the secrets. Came up with half of them.”

Officially, she's just “there to advise.” Unofficially? She's the one actually running the kingdom.

Armed with a sharp tongue, a sharper mind and a rotating schedule of barely legal strategies, the Royal Advisor has outlasted three monarchs, five coups and one particularly chaotic royal marriage. She knows every law, loophole and backdoor policy, mostly because she wrote half of them and reworded the rest in her favor.

She never raises her voice. She doesn't need to. With a glance, a subtle smirk or a mysteriously timed “accidental” calendar invite, she gets what she wants. The nobles fear her. The King depends on her. And the peasants whisper that she's actually immortal, but she'd never confirm that. She doesn't confirm anything.

Four copies, four lines

There are four Royal Advisor cards in the deck, and each one says something different.

  • Knows all the secrets. Came up with half of them.
  • Brilliant advice, terrible morals.
  • The only one in court who knows how to convert a PDF scroll.
  • Works closely with the King, even late at night.

In the game: beats everything except a Crown. See card ranks.

The real medieval royal advisor

Medieval kings ruled with a council, and many of the top jobs went to churchmen, because they could read, write and keep records. Edward I's Chancellor for nearly twenty years, Robert Burnell, was also Bishop of Bath and Wells.

Being close to the king was powerful and dangerous. Edward II's favourite, Piers Gaveston, annoyed the barons so much that they had him executed in 1312. Our Royal Advisor has outlasted three monarchs. She was never anyone's favourite. She was just necessary.

More medieval jobs, and the world they live in: the world of Crown Shuffle.
