The Beggar
“Rich in life lessons, poor in life choices.”
Once a respectable villager, now famously broke thanks to questionable investments in NFTs (“non-functional taverns”), the Beggar proudly embraces his new lifestyle. He may be the lowest-ranked soul in the kingdom, but he has mastered street-smart sophistication, blending charm with irony.
He hustles for coins with cheeky signs. Beware, though: put some change in his cup and you might hear the foulest things coming your way. Sure, he's financially ruined, but his caffeine habit remains intact, and that's what truly matters in life.
Four copies, four lines
There are four Beggar cards in the deck, and each one says something different.
- Rich in life lessons, poor in life choices.
- Accepts coins, cards, and cryptocurrency.
- Will beg for food, prefers beer.
- Living a minimalist lifestyle – not by choice.
In the game: beats nothing, loses to everything. See card ranks.
The real medieval beggar
In 1300, begging was an ordinary part of town life, and giving to beggars counted as a good deed that helped your soul. Some people even begged by choice: the Franciscan and Dominican friars, founded in the early 1200s, were “mendicant” orders, which means they lived on whatever people gave them.
The mood turned after the Black Death. In 1349 England made it illegal to give alms to anyone fit enough to work. Our Beggar would like it noted that he is not fit enough to work, and that he also takes cards.
More medieval jobs, and the world they live in: the world of Crown Shuffle.
