The Grave Digger
“Grave by day, rave by night.”
Born with a shovel in one hand and a death wish in the other, the Grave Digger quickly found his calling: digging holes and avoiding eye contact. He isn't just the guy who preps the final resting place. He's also the kingdom's resident vibe curator: dark clothes, darker humor and a flawless funeral playlist.
By day he digs in silence (unless you count podcast reruns about ancient curses). By night he sneaks off to underground raves held in abandoned crypts. Literally underground. Rumor has it he once DJ'd with a bone flute, but that might have just been a vibe.
Sure, he's card number 3, but emotionally? He's a solid 11. Quiet, reliable, and always carrying emotional baggage… and probably someone else's too.
Four copies, four lines
There are four Grave Digger cards in the deck, and each one says something different.
- Grave by day, rave by night.
- Business is dead, but he’s digging it.
- Putting the “fun” in funeral.
- Quit the corporate lifestyle for peace and quiet.
In the game: beats ranks 1–2, loses to 4–14 and the Crown. See card ranks.
The real medieval grave digger
Most medieval people were buried in a simple shroud. Coffins were mostly for those who could afford them. Churchyards were small and filled up fast, so when a new grave turned up old bones, they were cleared out and stacked in a charnel house, a bone store in or beside the church.
In many parishes the digging was one of the sexton's jobs. Steady work, quiet colleagues. There is no record of any of them DJing.
More medieval jobs, and the world they live in: the world of Crown Shuffle.
