The Smuggler

“Imports, exports – no reports.”

The Smuggler didn't choose the black-market life. The kingdom's shipping fees made her do it. Once a humble courier for the royal post, she realized it was far more profitable to deliver the things people weren't supposed to have.

Now she moves everything from illegal potions to knock-off Crown relics, with a flawless record of never being caught (or at least never sticking around long enough for it to matter).

She's tattooed, sharp-tongued and emotionally unavailable. Her motto? “If it fits, I'll ship it. No questions, no receipts.” She gets past guards with a wink and a forged scroll, and everyone from nobles to peasants knows: if you need something rare, risky or totally ridiculous, she's your girl. Just don't ask what's in the box. Or where it came from.

Four copies, four lines

There are four Smuggler cards in the deck, and each one says something different.

  • Imports, exports – no reports.
  • Legal is just a state of mind.
  • At least her services are tariff-free.
  • If it fits, it ships. No questions asked.

In the game: beats ranks 1–4, loses to 6–14 and the Crown. See card ranks.

The real medieval smuggler

Wool was medieval England's most valuable export, and in 1275 Edward I put a customs duty on every sack that left the country. When he raised it sharply in the 1290s to pay for his wars, merchants complained loudly, and some simply loaded their wool somewhere quieter, at night.

Wool smuggling carried on for centuries. Our Smuggler has moved on to potions and knock-off Crown relics, but she respects the classics.

More medieval jobs, and the world they live in: the world of Crown Shuffle.
